Il Giornale dell'Architettura ha raccolto dieci anni di micro-interventi in Sardegna, fra cui un salotto urbano costruito nel 2024 nella piazza di Esterzili. Poche decine di metri quadrati che rispondono a un problema enorme: lo spopolamento dei centri interni. Perché la piccola scala funzionaWhy small scale works
Un intervento piccolo ha un vantaggio che la grande opera non avrà mai: si costruisce prima che il paese cambi idea. Dalla decisione al cantiere passano mesi, non anni. Chi ci abita vede il risultato, lo usa, lo giudica. E l'architettura smette di essere una promessa su una tavola appesa in Comune.A small project has an advantage no major work will ever have: it gets built before the village changes its mind. Months pass between decision and site, not years. Those who live there see the result, use it, judge it. Architecture stops being a promise pinned to a wall in the town hall.
C'è poi una questione di rischio. Un budget contenuto permette di sbagliare in modo recuperabile, e quindi di provare. Le grandi somme producono prudenza, commissioni, rinvii. Le piccole somme producono cose fatte. In dieci anni, in Sardegna, questa differenza ha prodotto una rete di luoghi che funzionano.Then there is risk. A modest budget allows for recoverable mistakes, and therefore for trying. Large sums produce caution, committees, postponements. Small sums produce built things. Over ten years in Sardinia, that difference has produced a network of places that work.

Nei nostri paesi lo spazio pubblico esiste da secoli e porta nomi precisi: il sagrato, il cortile, la loggia, il baglio, lo slargo davanti al bar. Non serve inventarlo. Serve rimetterlo in condizione di essere usato, togliendo le auto, aggiungendo un'ombra, correggendo una pavimentazione che d'estate restituisce calore fino a sera.In our villages public space has existed for centuries and carries precise names: the church forecourt, the courtyard, the loggia, the baglio, the widening in front of the bar. It need not be invented. It needs to be made usable again: cars removed, shade added, a paving corrected that still radiates heat at dusk.
L'errore più comune è trattare la piazza come un oggetto di design. La piazza di un paese dell'entroterra è un'infrastruttura sociale: ci si incontra, si aspetta, si guarda chi passa. In an inland village the square is social infrastructure: people meet there, wait there, watch who passes. The project should add only what is needed for those habits to survive at five in the afternoon in July.
La materia aiuta. Pietra locale, calce, legno, acciaio lasciato invecchiare: superfici che accettano l'uso e il tempo. Un materiale che a tre anni sembra abbandonato ha fallito, per quanto fosse convincente nel rendering.Material helps. Local stone, lime, timber, steel left to weather: surfaces that accept use and time. A material that looks abandoned after three years has failed, however convincing it was in the render.

Molti dei nostri lavori nascono così: un immobile piccolo, in un centro storico, con un budget che non ammette ripensamenti. A Sambuca di Sicilia abbiamo ristrutturato una vecchia abitazione nel tessuto antico del paese, trasformandola in uno spazio da affittare. Il valore non era nei metri quadrati, ma nel fatto che una casa chiusa tornasse a essere attraversata.Much of our work begins this way: a small property in a historic centre, with a budget that allows no second thoughts. In Sambuca di Sicilia we refurbished an old house inside the old fabric of the village, turning it into a space to let. The value was not in the square metres, but in the fact that a shuttered house was being walked through again.
Ad Alcamo, le mura di una chiesa cinquecentesca sconsacrata sono diventate un luogo di lavoro. Anche lì l'intervento è stato misurato: capire cosa l'edificio sapeva già fare, e aggiungere soltanto quello che mancava. È il contrario dell'operazione spettacolare, ed è più difficile.In Alcamo, the walls of a deconsecrated sixteenth-century church became a place of work. There too the intervention was measured: understanding what the building already knew how to do, and adding only what was missing. The opposite of a spectacular operation, and harder.
Chi compra oggi in un borgo siciliano si trova davanti alla stessa equazione: risorse definite, vincoli reali, un paese che osserva. Per questo fissiamo budget e tempi prima del progetto, non dopo. Lo abbiamo raccontato parlando del nostro metodo di lavoro, e vale tanto per una casa quanto per uno spazio collettivo.Anyone buying in a Sicilian village today faces the same equation: defined resources, real constraints, a community watching. That is why we set budget and timing before the design, not after. We have described this in our way of working, and it holds for a house as much as for a collective space.
Il borgo non si salva con un solo progettoNo single project saves a village
Un salotto urbano non ferma lo spopolamento. Nessuno lo sostiene seriamente. Quello che fa è più modesto e più utile: dimostrare che il luogo è ancora capace di ricevere cura. Chi vive in un paese che si svuota legge quel segnale con precisione, e lo stesso vale per chi sta valutando se tornare.An urban living room will not stop depopulation. Nobody seriously claims it will. What it does is more modest and more useful: it shows the place is still capable of receiving care. Those living in an emptying village read that signal precisely, and so do those weighing whether to return.
La sequenza conta più del singolo pezzo. Un intervento ogni anno, nello stesso linguaggio, costruisce in un decennio una trasformazione che nessun progetto unitario avrebbe ottenuto con lo stesso denaro. È lenta, e sopravvive ai cambi di amministrazione.Sequence matters more than the single piece. One intervention a year, in the same language, builds over a decade a transformation no single scheme would have achieved with the same money. It is slow, and it outlasts changes of administration.
Serve anche onestà sulla manutenzione. Una microarchitettura costa poco da costruire e qualcosa da tenere in vita. Se nel conto non c'è chi spazza, ripara e sostituisce, il progetto durerà due estati. Questa, più del budget iniziale, è la vera prova.Honesty about maintenance is needed too. A micro-architecture costs little to build and something to keep alive. If nobody in the budget sweeps, repairs and replaces, the project will last two summers. That, more than the initial cost, is the real test.

Non esiste una cifra unica: dipende da superficie, sottoservizi e stato della pavimentazione. La logica dei micro-interventi documentati in Sardegna è però chiara: budget contenuti, costruzione essenziale, un elemento alla volta. Meglio un intervento piccolo e finito che un progetto ampio fermo in attesa di fondi.There is no single figure: it depends on area, services below ground and the state of the paving. The logic of the Sardinian works is clear, though: modest budgets, essential construction, one element at a time. Better a small finished piece than a large scheme waiting for funding.

The purchase price is often the smaller item; services, structural work, roofs and permits weigh more. We set a cost forecast before preliminary design, with an initial contingency that narrows as the project is defined.

Riducendo il numero di mosse e aumentandone la precisione. Si sceglie un materiale e lo si usa bene, si lavora sull'ombra e sull'orientamento, si evitano finiture che richiedono manutenzione specialistica. E si decide la spesa prima di disegnare, non dopo aver disegnato.By reducing the number of moves and increasing their precision. Choose one material and use it well, work on shade and orientation, avoid finishes needing specialist upkeep. And decide the spend before drawing, not after.
